Oxfam Regional Food Security and Nutrition International Conference organised in Georgia

Action Georgia supported the Oxfam programme in Georgia by organising the “International Conference on Food Security and Nutrition” in Tbilisi. The conference brought together policy makers, civil society organisations and international experts from the region and across Europe to discuss the current situation, challenges, and best practices in food security and nutrition policy development that support local food production. Oxfam has carried out extensive research through its European Union funded Project: “Improving Regional Food Security in the South Caucasus through National Strategies and Smallholder Production”. The conference participants presented research findings on the topics of nutrition, food security monitoring and gender sensitive approaches to agriculture and nutrition relevant for the South Caucasus Region and beyond. The two-day event highlighted challenges and best practices in policy development, implementation and monitoring to strengthen the support and commitment of civil society, policy makers and key stakeholders in food security and nutrition in the South Caucasus. The objective of the event was to assess challenges and share best practices and know-how on developing sustainable food policies and supporting local production. The conference also gave voice and a platform to local small-holder farmers, who spoke about the reality on the ground, and the hardships and challenges they are facing, while also exhibiting their products.
